With just a month to go until the date, Hasbro announced some of their SDCC 2024 Exclusives today. In a surprise move, the figures will actually be on sale at the show this year instead of the online only exclusives we’ve seen in the past few years. Click through for some press photos and reaction!
First up is a Megatron and Orion Pax set that references one of their origin stories as friends. I have been buying more Transformers lately than usual, but I’m no expert, so I don’t really have much to say on this one other than it seems to me that a set of the two main antagonists would probably do well on a retail shelf so this feels a bit odd to me for SDCC. Feel free to clue me into why I’m wrong in the comments below. This set will retail for $74.99 and will be on sale for SDCC with limited supplies later online.
This Maul and speeder set looks like in includes the Maul from the recent Maul/Obi/QGJ three pack just with a cloth skirt for sitting. With a probe droid, speeder, binocs and droid control braclet, he comes with a good amount of stuff, though I’m not sure if I’m feeling like it’s $60 worth of stuff. Fortunately for me I’ve already got a Figuarts version of this, but the Maul portrait is something I wouldn’t mind having. I’m sure they’ll triple dip on it eventually with a single card release. I do have a strange bit of nostalgia for that Episode I style packaging. Weird to have nostalgia for stuff I bought as an adult, but I suppose that’s par for the course when you’re as old as I am.
The name’s Death’s Head. Heard of me, yes? Now here’s a guy I’ve been wanting forever so I’m feeling that mixture of excitement tinged by a little worry that I won’t be able to grab him at the show or later online somehow. I figured we’d get him eventually since he was in the four inch line from Hasbro, but it’s been a long time in coming. He’ll be $40.00 which seems a bit high to me, but he looks to be re-using Ronan the Accuser parts, so he’ll be a big chunky figure. I do really enjoy the trading card style packaging and would like to see that again. Is there a Rom trading card?
Finally, my favorite reveal of this group, the “I WAS ONCE A MAN!” Cobra Commander. The G.I. Joe Movie and Cobra Commander’s Cobra La origin are controversial story choices in the fandom to say they least, but I have a lot of love for the pulpy wildness of it all. The set will come with a mid-transformation Commander and also a smaller near final mode that you can have hitch a ride on Roadblock’s back. Apparently the beautiful package illustration will be lenticular which explains why this guy is a little pricier than the usual deluxe G.I. Joe figure at $39.99. I really love the snake texture on the new body parts they added to retro Cobra Commander figure and it’s really cool to see the inside of CC’s face plate. It’s also kind of interesting because I had been hearing rumors from reliable sources that the SDCC exclusive for Classified was Raptor and the Pulse Con Exclusive was Starduster. I think this is a better exclusive than Raptor because CC has more general audience cache, but after this and the recent fancier box art for Nemesis Immortal, I wonder if Nemesis is actually the Pulse Con exclusive.
The other interesting wrinkle to this whole thing is that now we’ve got the return of buying Hasbro SDCC exclusives at the show itself. I’m not really looking forward to getting back to that process because getting Hasbro exclusives at the show can be a real pain in the butt and it looks like we’ve got some sort of lottery going on. On the other hand it is nice to have them in hand just that much sooner. I’m just hoping they still make the same quantities to they will be easily available online to those who want them. My impression of most recent Hasbro Exclusives was that they weren’t terribly difficult to obtain in the States, less so for other locales.
Well, I’m definitely down for two, CC and Death’s Head, what are you after? Let me know in the comments!
