Protoceratops (Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company) – Dinosaur Toy Blog

Review and photos by Torvosaurus, edited by Suspsy.

Howdy from wonderful, windy Wyoming! Today we’ll take a look at the Honourable Lead Boiler Suit (HLBS) Protoceratops. This review will be a relatively short review, as there isn’t much to this figure, which was made sometime during the 1990s.

The model is 1.5/8 inches (4 cm) long, placing it at 1/53 scale using a length of 7 feet for Protoceratops. This is the smallest HLBS figure in my collection. My wife actually has key fobs that are larger. The body is short with a fairly thick, outward stretched tail. The back legs are longer than the front legs. Each of the feet has four toes, which is fine for the back feet but incorrect for the front ones, which should have five toes. There are no actual unguals sculpted on any of the toes. Considering that the entire foot is only 3/32 inch (2 mm) long, its actually surprising they were able to get four toes sculpted.

The figure is in a mouth open pose, as if it’s calling to other Protoceratops in its herd. The head is large compared to the body, as it should be. It could use a shorter beak, as the beak is extended toward the front and gives the head an “overbite,” and it makes the head too long. The head has enlarged jugal bones and the frill extends well over the back. The head does not have a boss on the nose nor bosses above the eyes. The nose boss could have been added, but the two brow bosses probably couldn’t be added considering the size of the model.

The model came as a single piece, unpainted model. It is all white metal. HLBS currently has a Protoceratops figure on its site, but it is different from this model. It can occasionally be found on eBay.

Dolph says, “I’m going to hug you and love you and squeeze you and call you George.”

I purchased this Protoceratops because I needed to round out my HLBS collection. It is fairly accurate considering the size of the figure. Today, I wouldn’t go looking for it on eBay, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it if I came across it for cheap elsewhere. It may be a good figure for ceratopsian collectors who don’t mind a very, very small figure.
