Venezuelan fashion designer Carolina Herrera was honored at the 37th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards at the John F. Kennedy Center yesterday, Sept. 5. To celebrate the honor, Mattel designed a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in her likeness.
The doll is wearing a custom couture gown Herrera wore to the New York City Ballet’s Annual Fall Gala last October, which was designed by Wes Gordon, Creative Director of Carolina Herrera.
“Carolina Herrera and Barbie are both icons synonymous with strength in femininity,” Gordon says. “I was thrilled to attend the New York City Ballet Fall Gala last year with Mrs. Herrera dressed in one of my designs, and to have this look in signature Herrera Red and Pink immortalized in this way makes it all the more special.”
The doll will be featured in an exclusive editorial on the @BarbieStyle Instagram along with two dolls wearing runway looks from the Carolina Herrera Fall/Winter 2024 collection. Three fans will have the chance to own these dolls by bidding for them in the Bidding For Good Auction with proceeds going towards Solving Kids’ Cancer, an organization that funds breakthrough treatment options to cure children with pediatric cancer. The auction goes live today, Sept. 6, and closes on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
“Barbie has always been a very special doll for all the girls I know,” Herrera says. “Many have been created to represent multiple versions of women through the years, and I hope this one can make a lot of children very happy through our donation to Solving Kid’s Cancer.”
Barbie will also make an appearance at Carolina Herrera’s New York Fashion Week show on Monday, Sept. 9.
